The organisers of the weekly farmers market in Wells are worried that they are about to be kicked off their pitch.
Somerset Farmers’ Markets (SFM) has run the 17 stalls outside the town hall on Wednesdays for the last 12 years.
Two years ago Taste of Somerset and Somerset Life awarded Wells the Best Farmers Market award.
The market as a whole is overseen by Mendip District Council, but an SFM stallholder acts as a day manager to collect the stall fees, check that all health and safety issues are addressed, offer advice and support traders. At a meeting with Mendip asset maintenance officer Stuart Finney, SFM chairman Stephanie Keeble was told that there was no reason to have two managers at Wells Market and that it would be easier for all concerned for the market to be run as one organisation.
