Council chiefs have been accused of ‘doing nothing to help’ South Shields Market – after deciding to not take part in a nationwide initiative urging shoppers to back local traders.
More than 650 markets in the country have signed up for the second annual Love your Local Market campaign, which will see more than 3,000 events held to showcase local produce and trade over a fortnight.
The scheme kicked off on Wednesday – without South Shields Market being involved.
South Tyneside Council says resources are being focused on a wider shopping strategy as part of the town’s £100m 365 regeneration scheme.
A raft of plans have been earmarked for the next decade – including a new library and cinema – but town trader Lynn Lucas says support for the market is needed now.
