Redbridge Council drops rent rise for markets after farmers’ market in George Lane, South Woodford closes and Essex Farmers’ Market boss Ian Chisholm says Wanstead High Street market could follow.

STALLHOLDERS have thanked their customers for forcing the council into a u-turn over ground rents for markets.

Ian Chisholm, 52, took the decision to close the monthly Essex Farmers’ market which he runs in George Lane, South Woodford after the council raised ground rents from £15 to £28 a trader.

He said the rise meant he would have to charge traders £60 each, making it impossible for many of them to continue.
