Jan 23, 2012 Peter Rabbit Market News Comments Off on Featherstone town council takes over market
January 23, 2012 Yorkshire Evening Post *UPDATE BELOW*
Town council bosses in Featherstone took control of their local market this week.
Facing the axe as part of a cost-cutting scheme by Wakefield Council, it was officially handed over to the local Town Council who had stepped in to secure its future.
As reported in the YEP, Wakefield Council bosses announced last year that they were reviewing “non-core” markets in Featherstone, Hemsworth, Normanton and South Elmsall.
Council bosses said they were looking at delivering their markets differently as part of a review and an overall drive to reduce costs.
They asked locals to come up with their own business models to keep the markets going – which prompted the Town Council to step in.
The two councils held extensive talks to ensure the future of the town’s market and on Thursday, the day of the weekly market, the operation transfered to Featherstone.

Market is saved
TOWN councillors took the reins of Featherstone’s market last week to secure its future.
The weekly market was saved from Wakefield Council’s axe after the town’s community leaders voted in favour of taking over responsibilty for running it.
Umar Farook – who has run a stall at Featherstone market since 1998 – said it would have closed had the town council not stepped in. He said: “The town council are in regular dialogue with traders – public relations are a lot better already. They care about it and want the market to run for the benefit of the town.
“Hopefully, if they entice new traders in we will get more people shopping there.” Featherstone market was one of four “non-core” markets earmarked for closure by the council as part of its money saving review.
