WILL Barnard Castle’s loss-making weekly market close because no one steps forward to run it?
That was the question at this month’s town council meeting.
Worried town councillors are now trying to find a long-lost historical charter, which they say would safeguard the market.
Cash-strapped Durham County Council is seeking new operators for nine markets as it seeks to hand over the responsibility to an organisation or private firm.
However, town councillors were told any future operator of the Wednesday market stands to make an annual loss of about £1,100.
They are worried about the future of the market and are angry about a proposed “toll” of £5,000 a year which will be introduced by the county council to whoever takes it on. The town council has been considering a bid to run the market but say the offer on the table is unworkable.
