Famous site to make way for Sainsbury’s development
Plans to relocate the famous ‘Greatie’ market at Great Homer Street to a new £2.2m facility in Dryden Street have been approved – despite a mixed reaction from traders.
Liverpool Council’s planning committee gave the go-ahead for the market to move a short distance to the new site during a heated town hall meeting today.
The move is part of the £150m Project Jennifer regeneration programme, which aims to bring major investment centred around a new Sainsbury’s store.
A group of traders, residents and councillors spoke in favour of the scheme, saying new shops and a supermarket were much needed in the Everton area.
But others said the new facility was not big enough to accommodate their needs and would lead to traders losing their jobs.
It was revealed that while the new site would have an indoor market floor space of 937sq m, compared to 960 sq m at the existing location, the external floor space would be reduced from 4,847 sq m to 3,140 sq m – a 35% decrease.
Bill Darwin, a trader who opposed the plans, said they were “100% behind Project Jennifer” but the new site was “smaller and unworkable”.
He said: “As it stands people will lose their livelihoods.
“Another objector, Billy Clayton, said the council was offering 178 outdoor stalls with 10ft spaces, but the average trader currently takes at least 20ft and in some cases up to 40ft.
He urged the council to expand the site onto land it owns to the north west of the development and said: “On the floor space offered you will only get 60 traders. There are 125 traders so there are 65 traders plus staff that have got nowhere to go.
“If we move there in eight, 10 weeks’ time, the market will die and you will have no market.”
