North Lincolnshire Council says it is investing £150,000 to improve Scunthorpe Market and create 90 new car parking spaces in the town centre.
Redundant outdoor stalls have now been demolished and work has started to improve the rear of the Old Market Hall building and install new fencing, lighting, drainage and footpaths.
The new car park will be free for one hour to give people an incentive to do more of their shopping at their local market.
The news comes during Love Your Local Market fortnight – a campaign started by town centres’ champion Mary Portas.
She recognised the value of markets and their contribution to the local community.
