UPDATE December 28th See below
TRADERS believe they have won their battle against a month-long market closure.
Last week the Advertiser reported on Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) plan to close the Friday market in St Martin’s Walk throughout January to allow it to be “revitalised”.
Stall-holders who opposed the decision say council officers have told them the closure has been called off – though MVDC refused to confirm this when contacted by the Advertiser.
Billy Westley, who sells fruit and veg, said: “We are very happy that the council has relented and decided not to close the market.”
But traders are still “totally against” the council’s decision to appoint a new market manager, according to Mr Westley.
He said: “The next step for us is to organise a petition with customers’ signatures against the appointment and lodge it with the council.”
In the past, fees paid by traders have gone to MVDC, but stall holders told the Advertiser the new manager will take 40 per cent of what they pay – though MVDC also refused to confirm this.
Traders say they would rather run the market themselves, but the council wants to make changes to attract more traders and customers.
Existing traders are concerned that duplicating stalls and products could force them to leave the market, and some claim they are being told not to sell certain products any more to prevent competition with new arrivals.

Last week traders at Dorking’s Friday Market claimed victory in their battle against the closure, which was due to take place throughout January.
The council initially refused to confirm the U-turn, saying it would “continue to consult with traders and shoppers”, but it now says the market will stay open.
Trader Jimmy Jackson told the Advertiser: “The way this whole situation has been handled by the council has been very strange.
“Either they don’t know what they are doing or don’t want people to know. It seems strange that they couldn’t just have been straight.”
