GREEDY landlords, sky-high parking charges, moody British weather, the lure of internet bargains… your local market trader could be excused a persistent whinge.
The National Market Traders’ Federation (NMTF) reported the loss of 1,800 members in 2013 – the biggest drop in a decade, despite a freeze in the membership fees that help buy members some competitive insurance policies.
Meanwhile, traders in Arnold have been complaining about declining business and in Erewash the borough council has revised its parking policy in the hope of drumming up more trade for Ilkeston and Long Eaton.
In Arnold, the Tuesday, Friday and Saturday markets and Wednesday flea markets can accommodate 110 stalls. Long-term traders including a butcher, a tool seller, a florist and a bedding vendor have left in recent months.
