A shopkeeper is calling for the Christmas markets in Gallowtree Gate, Leicester, to be scrapped.
Stuart Delahoy, owner of Set Design Ltd, an independent retailer with two branches in High Street and St Martin’s Square, said the gift stalls, funfairs and farmers’ markets held in the run-up to Christmas draw people away from that side of the city centre.
He said: “We had a quiet day on Wednesday and when I went to the bank in Gallowtree Gate and saw all the stalls I realised why.
“These markets cause a drop in trade for us every time they happen – they form a physical and mental barrier that stops shoppers coming to the other parts of the city centre.
