Trader Liz Senior, who set up her stall recently, said she would be at risk of losing the life savings she has invested in her business because an upstairs market would fail.
The market looks set to move to make way for a new TK Maxx store.
The national brand has been eyeing up a place in the city for many months.
A discounted rent deal could be on the cards in an attempt to persuade market traders to accept the move.
Mrs Senior said: “A lot of people who use the market are older with mobility scooters or young families with pushchairs.
“They are not going to go upstairs. They can do all the rent deals they want but if you are left with no customers, you don’t have a business.
