Councillor Daniel Greaves says the Creative Markets craft and vintage events in Dalton aren’t sustainable as they are not commercially viable.
He said he was very sad they had to end but promised a bumper two-day Christmas event.
The markets kicked off last year after obtaining £10,000 of funding from the Mary Portas town centre regeneration scheme and were backed by the town’s mayor, Ann Thurlow.
Cllr Greaves, 28, who was market chairman said: “To keep the markets running we had to get farmers but we struggled as they didn’t want to get involved.
