SPALDINGS, Clarendon: THE SPALDINGS Market, or the lack of one, has been a sore point for the quiet town of Spaldings in Clarendon. The original market building was knocked down shortly before the 2007 general election by the authorities, with the promise of a replacement. However, to date, the new building hasn’t been completed.
When The Gleaner arrived in Spaldings, the location of the old market had a handful of vendors. A vendor was seen selling fish from a small Igloo. Another was selling some ackees. There was one main food vendor, Marlene Brown, whose stall had a variety of food items. This was a far cry from what the old market used to be like back in the old days. Another section had a few stalls where some clothes vendors were plying their trade.
Behind the area was the unfinished building that is supposed to be the new market with shrubs all around its lower section. There was another location – a transportation centre that housed some other vendors – still too small to accommodate all the vendors in the town.
