Worries grow for King’s Lynn market

There’s something of a cultural shift going on in the markets and we have to acknowledge that
FEARS for the future of Lynn’s Friday market were raised at West Norfolk Council’s meeting.
Liberal Democrat councillor Tony Bubb, from Dersingham, told fellow councillors that the previous Friday’s market on Lynn’s Tuesday Market Place had just three stalls on it. “It’s embarrassing for the town,” he said.
And referring to the recent decline in the number of stalls on Fridays, Alistair Beales, the cabinet member for regeneration and commercial services, said: “There’s something of a cultural shift going on in the markets and we have to acknowledge that.
“I am not sure the council can hold back the tide, although we are exploring what can be done.”
Mr Beales said there was a proposal to hold an indoor market at Lynn’s historic Hanse House, “and how this would dovetail in with the existing markets remains to be seen”.
He thought it reflected a wider problem resulting from changing shopping habits and was not just confined to the town’s outdoor markets.
