Market stallholders told to get out

BRICKWORKS Markets stallholders have been told that they will be kicked out within six weeks.

Woolworths, which will begin construction on the site in April, told all stallholders about its decision for the first time at a meeting yesterday.
Stall owners will receive a notice in the next two weeks that will then give them 28 days to leave before construction begins, stallholder Marc Smith said.

Woolworths is embarking on an $85 million redevelopment of the former flea market, at Torrensville, into a site hosting 50 specialty shops including a Woolworths, Big W, a food court and commercial office building.

Market stallholders vow to fight groceries giant

BRICKWORKS stallholders are threatening legal action after Woolworths’ decision to kick them out of the historic market.

Woolworths wants the stallholders off the site while it constructs its new store.

At a crisis meeting led by Independent Senator Nick Xenophon yesterday, stallholders, West Torrens council mayor John Trainer and chief executive Terry Buss and federal member for Hindmarsh Steve Georganas discussed options for the stallholders who have now been given until May to relocate.

Last hopes pinned on Xenophon talks

BRICKWORKS traders say they have been “sold out” after they were given two months to leave the Torrensville site.

Brickworks Traders Committee chairman Peter Athans said the markets would be “over” if Woolworths refused to allow them to trade at Ashwin Pde for at least two days each week.

This would leave 65 stallholders, some of whom have been there for more than 20 years, without a home.

This week the Weekly Times Messenger launches the Support Our Shops campaign to keep the traders on site.

The campaign also will support business across the western suburbs over the next 12 months, as they neogotiate challenging economic times.
