PLANS to move Newmarket’s beleaguered market to the High Street are dead in the water, according to the town centre manager.
Joanne Rogers said the main stumbling block was that Newmarket High Street was an emergency through-route for the A14.
She also said there were safety concerns over people wandering from one side of the street to the other between busy stalls.
The market’s future is now on hold until Helical Bar, owner of The Guineas shopping centre, reveals how, if and when it plans to extend the retail hub into the market square car park, she said.
A report published in 2007, which remained unseen until last year, concluded that “it is viable to accommodate a market on Newmarket’s High Street in highways terms”.
But Mrs Rogers said this week: “Moving it to the High Street is a no.
“The moment someone gets injured walking from one side to the other, the move would be seriously called into question.”
She said attentions could switch towards pumping money into the market to make it look more attractive.
