A STAY of execution granted to Ashbourne’s mid-week market has been hailed as a triumph for the town’s newspaper.
The Ashbourne News Telegraph has covered the market stalls review since July and was the first to break the news that the Thursday market had been earmarked for closure.
When news spread about the proposals, the newspaper ramped up the pressure, leading to unrivalled support for the stallholders from Ashbourne Town Council and shoppers.
Ashbourne Town Council was represented at special talks on the market by Alan Hodkinson, who later said: “We are delighted that they have listened to the petition and traders, whom the town council have been heavily involved with.
“But if it wasn’t for the articles in the News Telegraph about the petition and public opinion, we wouldn’t be in this position.
