COUNCIL BUSINESS? The Hop Festival
HOP Festival volunteers say Swale Borough Council (SBC) has no right to advertise for a new event organiser for this year.
Members of Faversham Hop Festival Ltd, which currently runs the event, said the authority has invited tenders for the role without any warning to them.
Faversham Hop Festival is a free two-day celebration which is held the first weekend of September, to commemorate the town’s hop-picking heritage.
In the past SBC helped to fund the weekend, but despite withdrawing the grant two years ago the authority is still the registered owner of the trademarks associated with it.
John Turner, one of the event organisers, was surprised by the news and said it will be discussed at a group meeting tonight (Thursday).
