TRADERS have been accused of “talking down” Oxford’s Covered Market in a row raging over proposed rent rises.

City executive board member for development Colin Cook called for positive promotion of the market behind the High Street.

It comes after plans to increase rent by an average of 40 per cent for tenants sparked fury among traders.

Mr Cook claimed tenants would still be getting “good value for money” even after the rent increases.

He said: “It’s got to the stage where we feel we need to explain our position and some of the misinformation coming out from some of the traders.”

Carmarthenshire County Council

Carmarthe market traders and C.C.C Trading standards with shop window stickers

A new Registered Market Traders Scheme is being piloted by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Trading Standards team in partnership with market managers.

The aim in setting up the scheme is to further improve the standard and quality of market trading in the county. Its purpose is to reduce and eliminate the number of complaints received and also to build a working relationship with the market traders.

Roger Edmunds, from Trading Standards said: “The Registered Market Trader scheme should hopefully act as a valuable resource for guidance and information to all different types of businesses within Carmarthenshire markets.
“There will be a number of benefits, including the use of a recognised logo which should hopefully provide consumers with extra confidence in dealing with those traders that have signed up to the scheme”.

The information provided in the packs will help market traders to stay on the right side of the law.
There will be advice with regards to warranty policies, as research has demonstrated that a good warranty policy can provide an organisation with a significant and competitive market advantage.

Richard Evans, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Property Manager, said: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with Trading Standards to offer this scheme which will be of great benefit to market traders across the county. I hope all traders take up this opportunity and will get on board with the scheme.”

Assured trader schemes like Carmarthenshire’s Registered Traders Scheme (which has already been launched and has been running successfully since 2004), are valuable to local communities and provide a signpost for consumers to reputable local businesses.
The schemes assist in marginalising rogue traders, helping businesses understand consumer law and allowing consumers the benefit of raised customer service standards.
Richard Wills, owner of Crumbs Cafe which has signed up to the scheme, said: “We welcome any information and advice which will help us to trade effectively.”

BRENTWOOD’S “shabby” market will be “improved” by the introduction of navy blue gazebos, costing around £10,000.

Brentwood has been a market town ever since it was granted a royal charter by King Henry III in 1227. Yet despite its history, some shoppers feel the current Saturday market is “not Brentwood”.

Market boss Mike Allen has now invested more than £10,000 in new gazebos to improve the stalls’ aesthetics after winning a new one-year licence from Brentwood Borough Council.

He plans further improvements but he warned: “Rome wasn’t built in a day. ”I do get some people who say ‘this isn’t Brentwood, it isn’t us’. ”You’ll always get people who don’t like the market no matter how good it looks.

Low numbers of traders setting out their stall at the markets in Darlington town centre had led to speculation that the monthly events were about to be cancelled.

Darlington Borough Council, which organises the markets alongside the popular regular markets, insists this is not the case.

But Robert Darling, of award-winning family business Burtree Puddings, based at Burtree Gate, said town centre shoppers are failing to show support for the farmers’ markets.

MARKET traders in Woking will have to meet a set list of requirements if they are to take up a pitch in the new market.

Detailed criteria is being drawn up by Woking Borough Council that current traders and prospective new ones will have to meet in order to be given a site.

Officers want to ensure the right “diversity and vibrancy” is achieved in the new market and will apply the criteria to anyone applying to become a stallholder.

In December, the £4.7m relocation of the market to Peacock Walk was given the thumbs up and a few months later planning permission was approved.

The current market at the end of Commercial Way will be bulldozed soon to make way for the £150m redevelopment of the area centred around a new Marks & Spencer store.

Two entrepreneurs have been announced as the winners to pitch their business ideas at Warminster Market.

The competition was run by Wiltshire Council and the National Traders Federation who has introduced a new scheme called First Pitch.

Peter Smith of The Sweet Market and Keta Hunt of Boozy Bakes will now sell their goods for five days at Warminster Market this month.

Keta Hunt will be selling her alcohol cocktail cupcakes on Friday, 24, May 2013 just one day after finishing her exams for her degree.

She said: “At university I had orders from other students and traded at student events, but I’ve found it difficult to build up anything local. I was looking for a way to get out and meet people and get people to know about the produce and markets seem the best way to do that.”
