Council to discuss market privatisation plans

PROPOSALS to privatise Ashbourne’s market and move it to land off Wellington Yard are to be taken to Ashbourne Town Council.
Town centre businessman Mick Gallimore, hopes to take over the running of Ashbourne’s Thursday and Saturday markets from Derbyshire Dales District Council and develop a plot of land adjacent to Shaw Croft car park into a permanent market place.
The plans, which have been met with some opposition and uncertainty from market traders in the town, are to be presented to Ashbourne Town Council’s environment committee, which will meet in the Town Hall on Tuesday, June 26 at 8pm.
The town council and market traders joined forces earlier this year in a bid to prevent the planned closure of the Thursday market by Derbyshire Dales District Council.
A consultation exercise into markets across the dales by the district council had resulted in recommendations to close Ashbourne’s Thursday market.
