Harborough District Council chief executive, Anna Graves, has met with representatives of the market traders to discuss the possible relocation of the market from Market Hall.
The meeting, on Friday, February 24, is part of the Council’s consultation with local people about the redevelopment plans for Market Harborough town centre.
The council holds a number of property assets in the town centre on behalf of people in the district.
The Council has said that the market is a great asset for the town and something that it wants to enhance and support for the future. However, independent consultants recommended the council should use its assets more commercially to get better value for taxpayers across the district.
The meeting, held at the council offices in Market Harborough, was attended by a number of market traders who shared ideas and concerns about the proposals.
The traders expressed that they would prefer to stay in the Market Hall, but also shared ideas and experiences about what has worked well in the past and what could work well in the future.
Anna Graves, chief executive of Harborough District Council, said: “We were pleased with the turnout and grateful to the traders for coming along to share ideas and thoughts with us around what is clearly a challenging issue. The traders acknowledge a need to do things differently with the market and there was an encouraging willingness on their part to take part in discussions which will ensure their views are considered as part of any future decisions.”
