Doubt over the future of Keighley’s street markets
Bradford Council has been accused of “not being interested in Keighley” after it was revealed funding could be axed for the town’s popular street markets.
KNOWN for the freshest of fresh flowers, the Columbia Road markets are about a 15 minute walk from Old Street station located just inside the Tower Hamlets
It is a shame that despite London’s rich history as a city built around markets and trading that these days visitors face a stark choice: either the amalgamated, gentrified giants or the depressed, back-water fleapits.
Historian and tour guide Sandra Shevey, one of our travelbite correspondents, writes the following about her recent travels to the historic street market of St Albans, administrative and historic county of Hertfordshire, England, in the valley of the River Ver about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of London.
Berwick Street Market is a well-established trading location in the heart of Soho. There has been a market here since the 1700s, but it was formally recognised as such in 1892. Unlike some markets that have been cleaned up and packaged into a posh shopping experience, Berwick Street is the real deal.
Anyone visiting markets in London should consider making a stop atCabbages and Frocks Market in Marylebone. It is open on Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is located on the grounds of St Marylebone Parish Church on the High Street.
Portobello Road itself plays host to one of London ‘s largest and most interesting street makets, which really springs into life on a Saturday. No visit to London would be complete without spending a few hours here.
